Richard Henwood Blamey was born on April 15, 1846 in Newquay, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, son of James Cardell Blamey (1816–~1852) and Jane Elizabeth Henwood (1819–1913).[1]
Richard migrated to Queensland, Australia, on the Flying Cloud arriving in January 1863[2] as an adventurous sixteen year-old, leaving behind in England his widowed mother and sister (who would marry four years later). Richard, who had learned the trade of a butcher, found work as a cattleman in Queensland.
Richard (24) married Margaret Louisa Murray (21) (born in 1849 in New South Wales; daughter of William E Murray and Johanna R (McKay) Murray) in 1871 in Queensland, Australia.[3] They would become the parents of nine children, eight of whom would attain adulthood. Two daughters remained single throughout their lives. Their third and youngest son was Second World War Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces, General (later Field Marshal) Sir Thomas Blamey. Their children were:
Richard and Margaret moved to the Wagga Wagga district of New South Wales and took up a small property at Lake Albert. Richard also found jobs as a contract drover and as an overseer of shearing-sheds.
They remained living at Lake Albert until moving to Parramatta around the turn of the century and then 'retiring' to the St George district in southern Sydney during the First World War years (1914-18). Son, Richard, took on the management of the property until, in time, also 'retiring' to the lights of Sydney. Daughter Edith and her husband, Claude Daley, remained on the land at Lake Albert.
Richard died on May 17, 1937 in Rockdale, New South Wales, Australia, aged 91.[4]
There was certainly longevity from the Henwood family; Richard's sister, Elizabeth, reaching 100 years of age and their mother was 93 when she passed away. Their youngest daughter, Maud, was the longest-living of their children at 88 years.
