Elmer was born in 1899. He was the son of Jacob Bohnenstiehl and Rosa Kaemmerer. He passed away in 1961.

Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Thursday, August 17, 1961: Elmer Leonard Bohnenstiehl, 62, of 709 Montclaire Ave. died Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland. Mr. Bohnenstiehl had worked for the Litchfield and Madison Railroad for 19 years, and the Shell Oil Company 17 years until his retirement March 1, 1960. Born March 14, 1899 in Jarvis township, Troy, he was the son of the late Jacob and Rosa Kaemmere Bohnenstiehl. On Dec. 23, 1923 he was married to Nettie Hein of Mt. Olive, who preceded him in death June 22, 1959. Surviving are two brothers, Gus Bohnenstiehl of Marine and George Bohnenstiehl of Highland; and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Pearl) Carnella and Mrs. Rose Gusewelle, both of Edwardsville. Mr. Bohnenstiehl was a member of the Shell Local No. 672 and the Shell Recreation club. The body may be viewed at the Schneider funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday until the services Saturday at 2 p.m. The Rev. R.F. Tormohlen, pastor of Eden Evangelical and Reformed church, will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
