Biography

Philipp Bommer was born 16 Aug 1825 in Nieder Mockstadt, Kreis Büdingen, Großherzogtum Hessen, Deutsches Reich. He was the son of Philipp Bommer & An Catharine Bommer ("Mother's Alias Gundermann") and was baptised 19 Aug 1825.[1]

Phillip Bommer married Elizabeth Zimmerman in 1853. Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated in Buffalo May 16, 1903.[2]

The 1855 NYS census for Ward 6, Buffalo City, Erie, New York lists:

Phillip Bommer Head Male 29
Elisabeth Bommer Wife Female 21
Louisa Bommer Daughter Female 0
Frederick Hasensahl Apprentice 17
Chatarina Bommer Grandmother Female 60 [3] Consulting the image Phillip, Elisabeth, Frederick & Chatarina were all born in Hessen, Louisa in Erie County. Her age is given as 1/12. At that time Phillip had been "resident in this city or town" for 4 years, Elizabeth 3, Frederick 2 and Chatarina 6/12. She is listed as a widow. I would think at 60 she was Louisa's grandmother & not Phillip's but I don't know that.

Except for the spelling the 1865 New York census for District 03, Ward 07, Buffalo, Erie, New York conforms to family history:

Research Notes

There is a record of a Philipp Bommer arriving in 1851 in New York City from Germany, on the "Cotton Plant" His age is given as 25 and his estimated birth year as 1826. His birth record gives it as 16 Aug 1825.[10] Alternatively he may have been born in '26 or'27, the seven at some point being misread as a nine, or perhaps there was an advantage in being a few years younger, like being five years older than his wife rather than eight.

I found a newspaper article in the Buffalo Express 13 Aug 1913 concerning the death of his son Rev Peter C Bommer in an auto accident which states "His aged father was alone in the house last night when the word of the fatal accident came...". This Phillip died in 1907 & his obit states that Peter survived him. I wonder if Peter's older brother Philip was living with him though there was only about a seven year difference in their ages, or perhaps it was his fatherinlaw?
