He passed away in 1918.
The Battle of Merricourt Ridge was fought during the First World War between the German and Allied forces in the Somme Valley of France. The battle took place from 26 March to 4 April 1918 and was part of the larger German Spring Offensive. The ridge was a strategic location that provided an excellent vantage point for the German artillery to shell the Allied positions. The Australian 4th Division, which included the 40th Battalion, was tasked with capturing the ridge. The battle was fierce, and the Germans put up a strong resistance, but eventually, the Australians were able to capture the ridge on 4 April 1918.
The Battle of Merricourt Ridge was a significant victory for the Allied forces as it helped to halt the German advance towards Amiens. However, it came at a great cost, with many lives lost on both sides. Pte. Arthur Bonser, who was a member of the 40th Battalion, was one of those who lost his life during this battle, killed in action on March 28, 1918. He was laid to rest at the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, Picardie, France. His name is located at panel 132 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
