Leslie was the son of Albion St. George Washington Brain and Mary Anne Dark; he came to Canada with his parents in 1904. The family first stayed in Toronto but, by 1921, they had settled on a farm near Fort Fraser, west of Prince George, British Columbia.
Les was a farmer in Vanderhoof, B.C. at the time of his marriage to Margaret. During the war years he was stationed in Victoria.
