Samuel Braley was probably born in Middleborough, Massachusetts, although Freetown, Massachusetts is also a possibility. His parents are currently listed as Gideon Braley and Patience Mayo. This is highly suspect. Gideon Braley was deceased by 1763 and his wife and minor children Sarah, Abigail and Gideon are listed in a court record. Samuel was not listed nor was a Russell Braley. If, according to tradition, Samuel was born in 1951 he would still be a minor. The most likely parents are Ambrose Braley and his wife Mary Reynolds. That would make Gideon his brother not father. The Braley family most associated with Freetown are those in Ambroses' line.
The next record we have for Samuel is his marriage intention to Sarah "Tailor" on 5 March 1764. We know from the numerous U.S. Compiled Revolutionary War Military Service Records, 1775-1783 that he served his country. Samuel was listed as a Corporal in the Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
In 1777 Samuel, his wife and six children are mentioned in a U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935 as having received financial aid. By 1778 Samuel seems to have removed to New Hampshire ( military or residence unknown). He is listed as having signed a petion to the local government. No other records from New Hampshire are found to date. It is interesting to point out that Ambrose Braley Jr is also found in New Hampshire at this time. Might be futher proof of Ambrose Sr being Samuel's father: each family line tended to similar areas of habitation.
The final part of the journey is Maine. The earliest record found is for a Rachel Braley, she married Abiel Harrington on 11 Mar 1791 in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine, USA. Then Samuel Braley (Jr?), 9 Jan 1796, was married to Elizabeth Cyphers and so forth. The earliest census record found is for 1800 a Samuel Braley with eleven people in the household. Then the family is listed in 1810, seven people in the household. On 5 Mar 1815 we have Samuel Braley married to a Maria Rollins. Sarah has passed before this date.
Sarah, his wife, is not listed in the records by name after the marriage intention. Her last name Taylor can not be refuted. Not only is the name Taylor (Tailor) listed on the marriage intent, but two of her sons are shown in a few records as Russell Taylor Braley and James Taylor Braley. If at some point she died and a new wife was taken there is no proof so far.

Samuel Braly on 5 March 1964 entered his intention to marry Sarah Tailor in Freetown, Bristol, Mass.
In 1777 an "Account of Distributions of Donations" U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935, Samuel Braley and Wife, of Freetown, Baptists, received 6 shillings. The number of children they had at this point was 6.
Samuel Braley in the U.S., Revolutionary War Rolls, 1775-1783 is listed as serving in Rhode Island, 1st Corporal in one record.
At the very least we are to assume that Samuel Braley married a Sarah Tailor in the area of Freetown, Bristol, Mass., around 1764. They lived in that area up until at least 1777, and had 6 children by that time. They most likely moved to Maine after the war due to a land grant for his war service.
