Biography

Mary was born in 1856. At the age of 9, she was left an orphan. At the age of 16, she joined the Methodist church near Mansfield, Indiana. She married J. O. Elson in 1876 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Their first son was born at Catlin, Indiana. In March 1878 they moved to Great Bend, Kansas. The remaining 7 children were born in Kansas. In 1904 they moved to Kinsley, Kansas until 1909 when they moved to Lockwood, Missouri. She stayed at the farm home for 3 years after her husband died in 1915, before moving to live with her son, Will, near Greenfield. She passed away in 1943.

"Mother Elson was a kind and loving mother and was happiest when surrounded by her children. She was patient thru all her hardship and brave thru her disappointments and heartaches. She never complained when her path grew rugged and no task was too great for her to undertake."
