Bertrand was a son of Clarence Brinley and Susan (Finley) Brinley.[1] They lived in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts before moving to California, where he married Euphemia Mary Jane Brown in 1937. While studying drama at Stanford, he was an assistant director at the Palo Alto Community Playhouse. He worked for Lockheed in southern California before enlisting in the United States Army on 7 July 1944.[2] He served through the Korean war as a special services officer for the Third US Army in occupied Germany. He was project officer for the Army's amateur rocket program before release from active duty on 4 September 1959.[3] He authored the Rocket Manual for Amateurs published in 1960, and four volumes of The Mad Scientists' Club stories written for Boys' Life magazine.[4]
