Biography

Jacob Brownson was born January 1640/41 at Hartford, Connecticut. [1]

Jacob, along with his brothers and father, was recorded in congregational records in Farmington, Connecticut Colony, as follows: [2]

John Bronson's Children.
  • Jacob Branson, 17 years old, about January 1657
  • John Bronson, 14 years old, about January 1657
  • Isaac Bronson, 12 years old, about January 1657
  • Abraham Bronson, 10 years old, about January 1657

He first married Mary (last name unknown)[3] They lived in Farmington, Connecticut, and their children were Isaac Bronson, Elizabeth Bronson, Rebecca Bronson, Jacob Bronson, Roger Brownson and Samuel Bronson. He married second Mary Andrews, the widow of Thomas Barnes.[4][5] Jacob died in Farmington March 1707/8.[6]

When did Jacob marry Mary Andrews? She is still called Mary Barnes in her father's will of 1681, and called Mary Brunson in her mother's deed November 9, 1683, when her first husband Thomas was still living. Some suggest that the deed was misdated or misread, and should be dated a decade later. This would mean that the mother of Roger Bronson was a previous wife of Jacob Brownson.

  • McArthur-Barnes ancestral lines, by Selim Walker McArthur (Portland, Me.: Anthoensen Press, 1964) pp. 57-60. "Thomas Barnes married first, Mary ____, who was executed for witchcraft in January 1662/3; and second, by contract dated 23 Mar. 1662/3, Mary Andrews or Andrus, born 15 Apr 1643, died after 1708, daughter of John and Mary Andrews of Farmington. .... it is deduced that Mary Andrews, second wife and widow of Thomas Barnes, married second, between 9 Nov 1681, when she was called "Barns" in her father's will, and the date of her mother's deed (18 Nov 1683), when she was called "Brunson". The difficulty is that Thomas Barnes was still living 18 Nov 1683 (he died 7 Feb 1689/90) .... The probable solution is that the date of the deed was incorrectly recorded or that it was misread by Mr. Andrews, and that the date should be 18 Nov 1693."

'... son of John Bronson... In the church records of Farmington, whither his father removed in 1641, it is stated that he was "seventeen years old about Jan., 1657." He lived in Farmington, where he and his wife, Mary[7], were members of the church in March, 1679. His father had, during his lifetime, "allotted to his foure sonns each of them a fifth part of his lands in Farmington," and at the distribution of the estate in 1680 Jacob, the eldest son, received oe72 2s.
'Jacob Bronson deeded to his son, Jacob, September 2, 1705, forty-one acres of land east of "Blew hill mountain," a lot formerly belonging to William Higginson. On April 16, 1701, he also deeded to his son, Samuel, the land on which his son's dwelling house stood; and on January 15,1707-8, he gave land to William Harris as part of the dowery of his daughter, Elizabeth. [Farmington Land Records, I: 28; II: 114, 122.]
'He died in 1708. His will, dated March 13, 1707-8, and offered for probate April 5, 1708, mentions a wife, Mary, and among other children, a daughter, Rebecca Dickinson. His inventory amounted to oe 166 1s 2d., and was taken March 25, 1708. [Hartford Probate Records, VII: 187, 188.]
