Biography

Hendrick Brouwer was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church, in New Amsterdam (New York) on April 3, 1695, son of Samuel Brouwer and Grietje (Smith) Brouwer.

Witnesses to the baptism were Laurens Van Hoeck, Elsje Hendricx. (Laurens is Hendrick's maternal uncle, the husband of his mother's sister, Joanna. Elsje is Hendrick's maternal aunt, married to his mother's brother, Barent)

On June 27, 1717, in the Dutch Reformed Church at Sleepy Hollow, Hendrick married Janitie Cranckheyt, daughter of Theunnis Herrickse Cranckheyt and Sophia Hendricksen Wiltse ^[1]

Hendreck Brouwer, j.m., and Janitie Kranckheyt, j.d., b. in the Hogelant [highlands of the Hudson], both living on the Bay of the Menaer of Cortlant.

The initials "j.m." and "j.d." after their names indicate that Hendrick is a "young master" and Janitie a "young miss," meaning that this is the first marriage for each of them. Both are living in the district of Cortlandt Manor at the time of their marriage.

Note: The image of the page from the church records has an interesting explanation regarding the use of the letter "C" versus the use of the letter "K" in the names "Cranckheyt" and "Krankheyt" as well as other Dutch names.
