Elizabeth Buffington was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) about 1785, the daughter of Ezekiel Buffington, a white trader, and Mary Emory, a Cherokee. [1] She first had children by David McLaughlin. They were the parents of Ezekiel, Andrew, and James McLaughlin. [2] Researcher James Hicks believes that there was a fourth child, Annie based on Eastern Cherokee application #1653. [3] According to Emmet Starr she had one child, Ellis Towers, with Jeremiah Towers, but Hicks believes there were two other children James and Polly. [4] The family was Removed to Indian Territory and the 1851 Drennan Roll lists Elizabeth living with son Ellis and his family in the Going Snake District. [5] Her death date is uncertain.
