John was born in 1861 in New Jersey. ^{[1] [2]}

On 1 June 1900 he (age 38), and a widower, was living in the Borough of Highlands in Middletown Township, New Jersey with daughters Nancy (15) and Lillian (9), and son LeRoy (6). He was a clammer. ^[1]

On 1 June 1905 he (44) was living in Highlands with daughter Lillian (14) and son LeRoy (12). He was a waterman. ^[2]
