Carlos Calvin Burr was born August 15, 1846 at St. Charles, Kane, Illinois to parents Benjamin Franklin Burr and Sallie Adelia (Barber) Burr[1]of Pomeroy, New York.[2]of Pomeroy, New York.[3]
He served as a private in the Infantry, (Regiment 15, Company D., Illinois) from 1861 - 1865 during the Civil War and received a pension. [4][5]
As an attorney, he moved to Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska in 1868; first working for the Lincoln Land Office and then joined the S. B. Pound's Law Office.[2]
Carlos married Mary E. Smith[6]about 1870.[7] She was born July 22, 1852.[8]
In 1870, Attorney at Law C. C. (Carlos C.) was aged 24 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska; his estate was valued at $3,000. His wife was Mollie E., aged 19 from Pennsylvania. One son had been born, Franklin S. who was one month old. Hannah Smith, aged 52 from Pennsylvania was living with the family.[9]
In 1880 Carlos, "C.C." is in the Lincoln Nebraska census records, he is age 34 and his wife, "Mrs. M. E." was 28. Their son: F. S. was aged 9; and three daughters were: Bertie C. aged 8, Grace I. aged 5, and Hellen aged 9 months. All the childen were born in Nebraska. They had a servant from Ireland living with them, Eliza Delanry.[10]
Five years later in 1885 Carlos C. Burr, lawyer, is 45 years of age from Illinois. His parent's, are said to be from New York. His wife Mollie is 35 years of age, from Pennsylvania. Their children listed as Frank S., age 15; Bertie O. age 12; Grace age 10, Helen age 5. Servant Carrie Myers from Germany, age 24, is also listed in the record..[11]
While in Lincoln, CC Burr's civic responsibilities included being on the City Council; Mayor of Lincoln and from 1875-1877 and 1885-1887 he was in the Nebraska State Senate.[2]
By 1900 the Burr family had moved to Manhattan, New York City, New York and were living at 304 West G Street. Members listed in the family are Carlos b Aug 1846, aged 53, occupation is register clerk, married 30 years; Mary his wife b July 1851, aged 48, given birth to four children; Franklin b. June 1871, aged 29, single; and Helen born September 1979, age 20, single. They three hired workers living at the residence: a cook, Emma Bregge, born May 1862 in Virginia age 28 widow having 2 children with one living; two servants Maggie Kelly, born August 1877 in Ireland, age 22, single; Sarah Esteh born October 1874 in Maryland, age 26, single.[7]
By 1917 Carlos and Mary had moved to Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio where he was listed in the business directory.[12]He was Vice President of the Sundry Cook Coal Company.[3]
His wife, Mary (Mollie) Burr died October 10, 1919 in Ohio and was buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska.[8]
At age 73 in 1920, C. C. Burr, widowed, was living in Montgomery, Ohio at 811 Manhattan Avenue. Members of the family included his son and daughter-in-law, Frank S. and Pauline. Frank was a broker, aged 49 and born in Nebraska, Pauline was aged 32 and born in South Dakota. Their three children were all born in California: Carlos Burr aged 7, Pauline Burr aged 5, and France Burr (male) was 4. The family had a nurse living in their residence, Caroline S. Musson, aged 49 from Ohio.[13]
Carlos Calvin Burr (C.C. Burr) of 840 E. Broad in Columbus, Ohio, died of senility at age 82 years, on December 5, 1927 at Columbus. He was living at the home of his daughter, Bertie Dawes.[3]Burial was at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln.[2]
in the 1885 Nebraska State census, Carlos C. Burr is incorrectly described as a female by the census taker.
