Biography

Wilson Cartwright was born about 1802 in North Carolina, at age 20 he is found on record serving as County Secretary or legal Clerk in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He grew up in Tennessee and possibly married there. In 1936 he was serving in a company of volunteers "the Carroll Rangers" under commander William Schly serving with mounted men for the purpose of guarding against hostility of Indians. (This info from a quarterly geneology paper on Georgia families "They were Here"). He married Susannah (Ragains - this maiden name may or may not be correct - See Note on bottom of this page). The 1840 census shows 3 sons and 3 daughters and 8 slaves. In 1843 he is found serving as Justice of the Peace in Carroll County, Georgia performing marriages and officiating various land transactions, he served as JP from 1843-1854. He was a well to do landowner according to the value of the property listed on various federal census. On the 1850 census in Carroll County, GA Wilson is living with Susan, widowed son Thomas his two children William and Alford Wilson's grandsons, his daughter Elmira and daughter Susan. In the 1860 Carroll County, GA Census Wilson is widowed with his youngest daughter Susan A. Cartwright age 16 living with him and his daughter Elmira and her husband William Binder and their one year old son William. Wilson and Susannah had seven children together. After Susannah's death some time prior to 1860 he married Mary Ann Howard Browning Ayers 1865. In 1866 record is found in Carroll County, GA where Wilson and Mary Ann were given guardianship of three children with the last name Browning, Mary Ann's children by her first husband. She had originally been given guardianship with her second husband Daniel J. Ayers prior to his death. These children are found living in Wilson's household on the 1870 Census along with Mary Ann's two children by her second marriage. Wilson died sometime after 1870. No will has been found to date in Carroll County, GA for Wilson Cartwright. Burial place unknown most likely Georgia (A Carroll County GA Cemetery Guide indicates there are 11 unmarked graves near the Cartwright plots in Asbury Cemetery in land district 6 same place as burial of his second wife Mary Ann in 1896 perhaps his grave is one of the unmarked ones). (Some information obtained from The Cousin's Henson Cartwright Family History complied by Faye Pool 1983 as well as research from Census and court records in Carroll County, Georgia)

Apparently Susannah Ragains birthdate is wrong on one or more of the documents but marriage records list her marrying Wilson cartwright and they even had a daughter named after her and a son named after him. So they were together, maybe she married a John Cartwright as well? or maybe the susuanna married to John Cartwight is a different Susanna as thgeir last names are spelled differently.. but the profifle picture is first hand information from the granddaughter of Mary Yers and Wilson Cartwright stating that He Married Mary and tghen Sussanah Ragains or Vise versa,.. I will add more sources later.. butr he is also listed in the newspaper article I posted with Susannah ragans and writer claims she cant say anymore or she will get into "trouble" .. hmmmm,?... don't know about you but it sounds to me like I've been deprived of my own heritage and birthright.
