Biography

Jane was born in 1805 in Yelvertoft, Northamptonshire. She was the daughter of William Castell and Elizabeth Seal and was baptised on 10 March, 1805 at the parish church in Yelvertoft^[1]

On 3 December 1827 she married John Johnson of Clay Coton at her home parish oof Yelvertoft. ^[2]

Their children included :

Henry Johnson, baptised 7 December, 1828^[3]

Charles Edward Johnson, baptised 10 October, 1830

Edmund Johnson baptised 27 March 1833, buried 30 March, 1833 ^[4][5]

William Johnson, baptised 17 May, 1835 ^[6]

Castell Johnson, baptised 23 September, 1838 ^[7], buried 11 March, 1839^[8]

Harriet Johnson, baptised 9 May, 1840M^[9]

Reuben Johnson, baptised 21 April 1844 ^[10]

Neville Thomas Johnson, baptised 2 April 1849 ^[11]

In 1841, the couple lived in Clay Coton with their children, Charles, William and Harriett ^[12]

By 1851, they had four children living with them: William, aged 15, working as a shepherd, Harriett aged 10, a 'scholar', Reuben, aged 6, a scholar and their youngest son Nevil Thomas, aged 3. Joseph was recorded as parish clerk and shepherd. He was recorded as parish clerk at the baptisms of several of his children. At his marriage, Joseph made his mark on the register, normally signifying an inablilty to sign. Jane signed the register with a clear hand. Jane's father William and her grandfather, Thomas had been parish clerks in Yelvertoft. Perhaps, Jane taught her husband to write or perhaps she performed the role. The small income and parish grazing land that went with the job would have been invaluable to the young couple. ^[13]

She died in September, 1870 and was buried at Clay Coton on 30 September 1870. Her age at death was said to be 65 ^[14]
