Biography

Benjamin is part of the Roland Park and Armstrong and Cator family. He was a Democrat.

BIRTH Benjamin Franklin Cator, Sr., born February 10, 1824 to Joseph Cator (1778–1852) and Hannah Brohawn (1786–1853) of Dorchester County, MD. It has been stated that he was born in Charlottesville, VA and then removed to Dorchester for his upbringing. Brothers William, and Robinson were born on a plantation near Cambridge in Dorchester County, MD. This house, dating back to 1710, stood on the east side of Cators Cove in Hoopers Neck. The text and photos are from the book "The Chesapeake Bay Country" by Swepson Earle published in 1923.

LeCompte or Cator Mansion in Dorchester County MD is the early home of Robinson W., Benj F. and Capt. Wm W. Cator and Mrs. Mary A.B. Watters then purchased by Capt W. W. Cator

MARRIAGE Benjamin Franklin Cator (1824-1872), was one of the founders of Armstrong and Cator Co in Baltimore. He married Sarah "Sallie" A. McNamara Dec. 16, 1851. [1]

1852: Daughter Mary Josephine Cator born 11 Nov 1852 and died Mar 7 1913 (aged 60). Buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
1856: Son George Cator born 10 May 1856; died at age 75 on 25 Feb 1932 (aged 75). Buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
NOTE ABOUT SON GEORGE CATOR 1856-1932 was in Who's Who in America. (Prominent businessman in Baltimore; responsible for establishment of Fidelity and Deposit Co. and the American Bonding Company. He was interested in history and the 19th century. He gave to the Enoch Pratt Library his collection of 200 prints and watercolors depicting Baltimore between 1752 and 1932.
1858: Son Benjamin F. Cator JR born Sep 8, 1858; Died 1932 (aged 29). Buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
1860: Daughter Carrie Louisa Cator born August 25, 1860 Baltimore, MD. She married Dr. Herbert Harlan, a physician born in Harford County, MD May 7th, 1856; she died October 10, 1935.
1864: Daughter Grace Stuart Cator born 19 March 1864; passed away on May 30, 1866, in Baltimore, Maryland from Scarlet Fever. She was 2.

1860 Census Baltimore City: Benjamin age 35, merchant, owns an $8,000 home/personal property of $33,000. His Wife, Sallie is 26. Children in home are George (4), Josephine (7), and Benjamin (2). Also living there are William Watters 25 (clerk) and Solomon Brown 21 (waiter).

1872 Death of husband Benjamin Franklin Cator b. 10 Feb 1824 d. 5 Jan 1872 (aged 47). Buried in the Dogwood Area of Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore MD.

Following his death:

1885 Census for Baltimore, MD. After his passing, his widow Sallie A. Mc Namara Cator lived in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1885. And per the Baltimore City Directory, she was the widow of Benjamin F. Cator. She boards/lives at St. Paul Street, which is the home of her husband's brother George Cator.

1907 Death of his widow Sallie A. Mc Namara Cator She died on November 24, 1907, when she was 75 years old. She was living at 803 St. Paul Street in Baltimore (part of Roland Park) when she passed away after having been ill for about two weeks. The funeral service was at Christ Protestant Church. Burial Green Mount Cemetery Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland [6]
