Nathan was born about 1883 in Bell County, Kentucky to Dan Centers and Mary Jane Stewart. Nathan's father died prior to 1888 and his mother remarried to a man named James Willard. They went on to have Nathan's half-sister, America.
Nathan married Myrtle and worked as a coal miner and later as a mine foreman. Nathan was involved in the Belva No. 1 Mine disaster and was entombed in the mine with several other men.
