Occupation

1891 Census: Charwoman

Notes

She was living unmarried with her father in 1851.

By Thomas Platt, of High Street, carver and gilder, b. 1814-15(?) at Sheffield, Yorkshire, she had three illegitimate children, frankly acknowledged as such in their baptismal records. From the time they baptized their fourth child, born in 1852, they represented themselves as a married couple and gave the children the surname Platt, though whether they were in fact married has not been determined.

Thomas Platt's occupation is consistently given as guilder in the baptismal records, but they later show him at Market Place in (1848, 1854, 1855, 1857, 1860) and at Little South Street in 1863. A note in the baptismal record of their son Thomas (1858) says that the fatherwas "admitted into the church" on 13 Aug. 1860. Thomas and Caroline Platt are listed in the 1861 census of Wisbech, in which he is called a carver and gilder, of 26 Market Place.

Received some details from Carol Kimberley (bitafitatyahoo.co.uk) re baptisimal records for Thomas Platt's and Caroline Elizabeth Chance's children which listed the following:Elizabeth - baptised 12/1/1841, died Dec 1841Hortence Platt Chance Platt baptised 01/12/1843 (could this be the first Martha who I presumed died and I have made a mistake?). Carol cannot find any further record of Hortence so it is probable that she did indeed die shortly there-after.Martha Emily Platt Chance Platt baptised 16/01/1846Elizabeth Platt Chance born 28/04/1848, baptised 13/08/1848Julia born 08/08/1852, baptised 16/08/1857Elvina Louisa Platt baptised 02.06/1854
