Henry Plummer Cheatham was an educator, farmer and politician who was elected as a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina during Reconstruction.[1]
Henry Cheatham was born into slavery in 1857. He was a son of Mary Adeline Cheatham, an enslaved woman of the Isham Cheatham family in Granville County, North Carolina.
Henry served as Representative to the United States Congress for North Carolina from 1889-1893. He was later appointed Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia and served from 1897-1901.
Representative Cheatham returned to North Carolina with Laura, and they ran the "Colored Orphanage" in Fishing Creek, Granville County, North Carolina.
Representative Cheatham died in 1935.[4]
He is buried in Plummer Cheatham Memorial Park in Oxford, North Carolina.[5]
