Biography

Mary was born in 1824. She was the daughter of Thomas Chinn and Susan Smith.

In 1841 he was united in marriage with Mary Ann Chinn,^{[1] [2]}their union being celebrated in this county. This lady is a daughter of Thomas and Susan (Smith) Chinn, who are numbered among the pioneers of 1839.

She is descended from illustrious families on both sides. Her father who was an Englishman by birth, was an own cousin of Sir Walter Scott, and after his emigration to this country became one of the warm friends of George Washington, in fact Gen. Washington was the administrator of his estate and guardian of his children

Mrs. Chinn who is yet living at the ripe old age of ninety-three, was born in Kentucky, and Mrs. Gilbert is a daughter of the illustrious Sir Thomas Chinn of England. She is the eldest in a family of four children : R. W., the second child, is married and resides in Dumont, Colo.; Hezekiah is living in Cowley County, Kan., and Henry is now deceased.

By the union of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert eight children have been born, seven of whom are now living :

1. Martha Gilbert Stiles (16 Mar 1842-23 May 1929)^[3] is the wife of George H. Stiles ( 13 Jun 1833 in Barnstead, N.H. -d. 27 May 1904) a farmer of Sweetland Township.
2. Andrew Jackson Gilbert, (11 Dec 1843 Muscatine County, Iowa,-7 Feb 1916 (aged 72) Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas,) ^[4] a resident of Arkansas City, Kan., wedded Sarah Lorin, daughter of A. T. Lorin ;
3. Alice M. Gilbert Millet (1846 Iowa, -26 Jul 1887 (aged 40–41) Muscatine County, Iowa, ^[5]
4. Irene Gilbert Huffmaster (b. 1 Apr 1848-d. 10 Feb 1913)^[6] wife of Rudolph Huffmaster, a resident of Muscatine ;
5. Raleigh Gilbert (1851-1896) is the husband of Melvina Gordon, and resides in Muscatine ; ^[7]
6. Mary Catherine Gilbert Chandler (b. 13 Aug 1852-d. 24 Apr 1903)^[8], is the wife of Howard Chandler, whose home is in Mercer County, Ill.;
7. Douglas Gilbert (9 Oct 1854 Muscatine County, Iowa, -20 Dec 1937) (aged 83) South Sioux City, Dakota County, Nebraska,) BURIAL Grand Island Cemetery Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska,^[9]· is a farmer residing in Hall County, Neb.;
8. Samuel Vincent Gilbert (February 1862 – 7 February 1926)Eli , a resident of Sweetland Township, married ^[10]Gertrude Lamp, a native of Prussia, and is employed as the engineer at the tile works.

She passed away in 1900.

7. ↑ Raleigh Gilbert son GROVER CLEVLAND GILBERT Grover was the son of Melvina (Gordon) & Raleigh Gilbert. His father must have died at an early age because in the 1900 census his mother Melvina is listed as widowed living in Duncan, Mercer County, Illinois with children; Howard, Grover, Mary and Elsie. Also living with the family is Grandfather, William Gordon. Grover stayed single the majority of his life and lived at home with his mother. In the 1910 census Grover is living with his widowed mother in New Boston, helping her on the family farm. In 1920 they are still together on the farm but Grover has now taken over farm operations. By 1930 Grover is no longer running the farm and Melvina is living on a farm with her daughter and son-in-law Grace and Harry Prouty and Grover is living in a rented home doing odd jobs. Grover must have briefly left Mercer County because on Nov 28, 1951 he married Matilda Christian Holt in Minnehaha, SD. I find no record of them having children. Grover had six siblings which included; Grace Maude, William Henry, Howard, Mary & Elsie. He is buried in the New Boston Cemetery next to his brother Howard and sister-in-law Kate.
