John E. Clafton was born 2nd May 1891 in Chateaugay, Franklin, New York, United States,^[1][2] son of William Clafton Sr and Jenette (Bullis) Clafton.^[3]

On 1st Jun 1900, Elton Clafton, born May 1891, aged 9, was At School and living with his parents William Clafton (37) and Jenette Clafton (34), his brother Glen (5), sisters Elsie (7), Bessie (3) and Ruth (1) at Staples, Todd, Minnesota. His birthplace was New York.^[3]

In 1910, aged 18 and unmarried, he was a servant living in the home of Jay W. Ingison (b: abt 1860, New York) in Denmark Ward, North Dakota. He declared his occupation as For(e)man.^[4]

By 1911, aged 20, he had married Emma Ellen Isbister and they were living in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan. He was a Railroad Labourer and he declared he was born in Quebec and was a Canadian citizen of English background.^[5][2]

On 1st Jun 1921, John Clafton, aged 30, head of house and married, was living with his wife Ema (sic) (31), son James (7), daughters Amie (9) and Georga (sic) (5), at 121 High St, R M of Weldon, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was a Labourer in the Telephone industry and this time he declared his birth place as USA, immigration as 1910, naturalisation as 1914, Canadian citizen of Irish background.^[6]

In 1935, aged about 44, he was a Constable, living in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, and registered to vote in the Melfort electorate.^[7]

In 1942, aged 50, he registered for the WWII draft. At that time he was living in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.^[8]

On 1st Apr 1950, John E. Clafton, aged 58, head of house and married, was a Contractor in the Construction industry and living with his wife Emma E. Clafton (60), and sons John E. Clafton Jr (20) and Glen Clafton (18), at 73 Going N. on Highway 38, Arbo, Itasca, Minnesota. His birthplace was New York.^[9]

On 20th Dec 1960, John E. Clafton, aged 69, married Ethel M. Winschanz or Ostrander, aged 54, in San Bernardino, California. There are two marriage entries, identical except for Ethel’s surname - Ostrander is Ethel’s maiden name, while Widschanz is her first married name.^[10]

In 1962 & 1964, aged about 71 & 73, he registered to vote at 32676 Foothill Rd, Lucerne Valley, San Bernardino, California. Affiliation: Republican (his wife was a Democrat).^[11]

John Elton Clafton died 14th May 1972, aged 81, in San Bernardino, California,^[12] and was buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.^[2]
