Henry was born on 2 March 1861 in Westhoughton, Lancashire and was christened on 23 July 1861 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates, Westhoughton. [1][2] He was the son of Thomas Close and Margaret (Hope) Close. [3]
His mother died in 1868. In 1871 Henry (age 10) was living in Red Row, Horwich, Lancashire with his father and siblings. [4] In 1881, age 20, he was a wheelwright apprentice, still living with his father and siblings near Horwich Junction, Blackrod. [5]
On 20 August 1887 he married Ann Alice Mason (1864-1894) at St Katharine, Blackrod.[6] In 1891 Henry and Ann were living at 228 New Street, Blackrod, Lancashire with their daughter Elizabeth, where Henry is described as a joiner. [7] His first wife Ann Alice Mason (1864-1894) died in 1894.
When Henry was 35 he married Clara Sumner (1867-1940) in 1896 in Wigan, Lancashire. The couple had 4 children: Stanley Sumner Close, Clara Close, Edith Magdaline Close and Katherine Close.[8]
Between 1896 and 1899 Henry (age about 34) was described as an insurance agent.[9][10]
In 1901 Henry (age about 39) was living at 4 Hill Lane Blackrod with his wife Clara Sumner (1867-1940), two children and two boarders.[11]
From 1902 onwards Henry was a beerseller at the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, 31 Blackhorse Street. [12][13]
Henry died at the age of 58 in 1919 and was buried on 1 July 1919 in Blackrod Cemetery. [14]
