Thomas was born in 1842 in Shevington, Lancashire, England and was christened at St Wilfrid, Standish on 7 August 1842. [1] He was the son of William Close and Elizabeth (Turner) Close.
In 1861 he was living in Blackrod, Lancashire with his widowed mother and six siblings. [2]
On 4 Jan 1864, at St Peter, Bolton le Moors, he married Alice Blackledge. [3] Thomas and Alice had three children: Maria (1865-), William (1868-) and Elizabeth (1871-).
Thomas was killed in a colliery accident on 11 June 1873. [4]
↑ Liverpool Mercury, Fri 13 June 1873: "TWO COLLIERS KILLED – Yesterday, a collier named John Lindsay, of Aspull, was at work at the California Pit, belonging to the Wigan Coal and Iron Company, when a portion of the roof fell upon him, crushing him to death. He was 39 years of age. – On Wednesday evening a similar fatality befell a collier named Thomas Close as he was at work in Scot-lane Colliery, Blackrod, belonging to Messrs. W Woods and Son. Deceased was 30 years of age, and leaves a widow and three children."
