JOSEPH GORDON CLOYD, son of Samuel and Betty (Rogers) Cloyd, was born in Washington County, Tennessee, and married Susan Kathryn Todd, (b. 1-22-1822; d. 11-7-1908), dau. of William A. Todd. She was born in Sumpter, and died in Columbia, S. C. He was a democrat, a contractor by occupation, and in religion a Methodist.

Previous to the Civil War he resided at Lenoix, S. C, and when the war between the States broke out he enlisted in the Confederate Army and was killed at the battle of Seven Pines in Virginia, 1862 and buried on the field.

Company A. Private, J.G. Cloyed[1] The Battle of Seven Pines, also known as the Battle of Fair Oaks or Fair Oaks Station, took place on May 31 and June 1, 1862, in Henrico County, Virginia, as part of the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War.[2]
