Biography

Samuel Clutterbuck was the eldest son of Roger Clutterbuck and Elizabeth Fowkes. He was named in the 1700 will of his grandfather Thomas Clutterbuck DD.[1]

He obtained a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in July 1708.[2] The regiment was then stationed in Somerset and Devon, but the following year sailed for the Iberian Peninsula as part of the British presence in the War of Spanish Succession. From 1713 to 1718 they were based on the island of Minorca (then a British possession) and from 1718 to 1719 at Naples and Sicily. In 1719 they returned to England, then sailed for Ireland where they spent the next several years, including at Dublin and Galway. In February 1727 they returned to England and were quartered in Wiltshire and Hampshire.[3]

As Samuel Clutterbuck Esq of Salisbury he was plaintiff in a 1727 Chancery suit against his father Roger, brother Thomas and two others.[4]

He was promoted to Captain-lieutenant 9 July 1729 and full captain 3 April 1733. After some years in England the regiment had transferred to Gibraltar in 1732 and remainined there until 1749, when they returned once more to Ireland. He left the army 2 May 1751, while the regiment was stationed at Dublin.[5]

He died at Galway 4 February 1753: “Dublin, Feb. 10. Last Sunday died at Galway, Capt. Samuel Clutterbuck, late of Colonel Mostyn’s Regiment of Foot; he was a brave and good Officer, had been twenty Years quartered in Gibraltar, and was at the Sea-Fight at Toulon, where he had but three Men of his Company left alive.”[6]

His will, dated 28 December 1752, named his wife Christian, son Thomas, and daughter Christian; the will was proved at Dublin 15 December 1764.[7]

Research Notes

The book “An Account of the Principal Branches of the Family of Clutterbuck” says that he “probably married Mary, dau. of Richard Cromleholme Bury”; in fact she was the wife of Richard Clutterbuck of Co. Tipperary (as named in the latter’s will), while Samuel’s wife was certainly named Christian.
