Obituary
PASSING OF "JOE" COCK One-Time Fine Sportsman On Peninsula By "Wanderer" There died in Adelaide recently one of the most popular sportsmen Yorke Peninsula had between 30 and 40 years ago -Mr. Josiah (Joe) Cock, a Moonta man. Keen on all athletic sports, he could also sing a good song, tap dance like a professional, sprint a fast 100 yds., could use the boxing gloves with good effect, and could swim fast enough to extend that great Wallaroo water man, the late "Masher" Thomas, well known to Pirieans. Back in 1898 "Joe" was a corporal in A Company, Adelaide Rifles, and he was one of the early enlistments in the 1914-18 war. He was wounded and invalided home in 1917 and disappeared from the sporting stage. His later appearances on the athletic field was in the role of football central umpire in the days when Turks, Wallaroo, Kadina ("Rainbows"), and Moonta formed Yorke Peninsula Association. '"Rainbows" home oval was Newtown ground, were Kadina's trotting track has since been constructed, and some hectic games were played there. The writer has a boyhood recollection of the irrepressible "Joe" Cock after a match making a beeline for the old Kadina Hotel, on Wallaroo road, his street clothes beneath an arm and an angry crowd of "Rainbow" supporters in the rear. But, as mentioned before, the curly-headed "Joe" could sprint, even after an afternoon of hard umpiring. And he thrived on football trouble, for, despite his penchant for getting into trouble with barrackers, every one liked him. He was a most versatile chap.[6]
