James Cole, Jr. was born about 1846 in Pennsylvania. He was the child of Rachel Walls and James Cole. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 19 years old, single and working as a farmer on 14 March 1863 in Oxford, Pennsylvania. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.
His brother Josiah also served with Company B.

He passed away in 1907[1] and is buried at Union Hill Cemetery[2] in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
John was born in 1837. He was the son of James Cole and Rachel Walls. He passed away in 1917.
