Biography

Cornelius Demarree was born about 1795, in Kentucky, United States,^[1] the son of Cornelius Demaree and Phoebe.

The Demarest Family states that Cornelius was born about 1790 (apparently in Mercer County, Kentucky) and married as a young man (specifics not known to the author). He purchased land at Azariah's Run in Mercer County on 8 February 1821 and removed to Switzerland County, Indiana, circa 1822, settling near Vevay on the Ohio River, where he was active in the Presbyterian church and temperance work. He was identified with two sons: Daniel born about 1814 and Samuel born about 1818.^[2] He also brought up his niece Phoebe Curry, daughter of his older sister Magdalena, who married in 1807 and died "early" (some time before 1820). ^[3]

He married Delphine Keepers on 15 November 1837, in Jefferson County, Missouri. According to the marriage record, Cornelius was the son of Cornelius Demarree and Phoebe his wife, and Delphine was the daughter of James Keepers and Mary his wife. The marriage record was certified by "Frs B Jamison, Parish Priest, St Louis."^[4][5][6]

Cornelius and Delphine were the parents of 3 daughters.

Delphine must have died before the enumeration of the 1850 U.S. census, which recorded C H Demaree (age 54), born in Kentucky, in District 42, Jefferson County, Missouri, with Caroline Demaree (age 9) and Mary V Demaree (age 7).^[7]

Cornelius married Lucinda Longwith, widow, on 26 Jan 1853 in Jefferson, Missouri, United States.^[8]

Cornelius and Lucinda were the parents of several children.

Research Notes

I think his parents are likely to be Cornelius Demaree (1761-abt.1847) and Femmetie "Phoebe" (Brouwer) Demaree (1763-1810). They were among the Dutch-descended families that went from the New Netherland region to Conewago County, Pennsylvania, and thence to Kentucky, where they are considered part of "Low Dutch Kentucky" (see Low Dutch Settlements in Kentucky). When I saw the Demaree name in this family tree, I immediately assumed that Cornelius was descended from the Demaree families of New Jersey, and I looked for likely parents from that population (by searching for Femmetje Demaree, as I know that Femmetje and Phebe were equivalent). The Demarest genealogy cited in the profiles of Cornelius Demaree (1761-abt.1847) and Femmetie "Phoebe" (Brouwer) Demaree (1763-1810) identifies them with a son named Cornelius, born circa 1790. The 1850 U.S. Census gave C H Demaree an age of 54 (meaning he was born about 1795).
