Research Notes

The DEWBERRY family name originated with the John Dewberry family that moved from Georgia to Texas around the time that Texas was admitted into the Union. In 1850, John, age 50, his wife, Mary Ann, age 43 were living in Smith County along with Cynthia Brindley, age 21 (born in Arkansas), and Nicholi Gregory, a 9 year old male born in Norway. His real estate was valued at $15,000.00 and he registered 31 slaves. By 1860, John was listed on the slave census with 47 slaves. On the "free" census, John owned property worth $25,000.00. Apparently Mary Ann had died because his wife was listed as Mariah, age 27, with 2 daughters, Eddie, age 9 and Emmer, age 7. According to "Smith County, Texas: It's Background and History in Ante-Bellum Days “(by Adele Henderson) - "Colonel John Dewberry married a widow with 2 small girls after he arrived in Tyler, Texas. His ....... slaves showed their great love for their master by taking his name after they were freed.".[4]
