Doeke Sijes Dijkstra was born on January 19, 1887 in Hijlaard, the son of Sije Dijkstra and Sijtske Faber. He emigrated to the USA in approximately 1908 where he changed his name to Richard Sye Dykstra. He registered for the draft in 1917, but it is not known if he served.
In the 1920 and 1930 Census he is listed as a Boarder on the Kooistra farm in Lowell, Snohomish County, Washington. In approximately 1928 he married Lillie Evelyn Hodge, but they did not have any children. In 1929 he helped his nephew, Sam Dykstra, to obtain employment as a milker on a diary farm in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1942 he again registered for the draft, by that time listing himself as a self employed dairy farmer.
In the early 1950's "Dick" and "Lil" helped his nephew Sam, and his new family, purchased land, and cows for them to have a dairy farm in Woodinville, Washington.
He died on February 26, 1957 and is buried in the Snohomish Cemetery in the state of Washington. His wife died on August 1, 1957, and is buried with him.
