Edsger W. Dijkstra was a Dutch computer scientist, programmer, software engineer, systems scientist, and science journalist. Dijkstra and his colleague Jaap Zonneveld developed the first compiler for the programming language ALGOL 60 by August 1960. Among his most famous contributions to computer science is the shortest path algorithm, known as Dijkstra's algorithm.[1]
He married Maria (Ria) C. Debets in 1957.[2] 3 children: Marcus, Femke, Rutger M. Dijkstra (also a computer scientist)[2] He succumbed to cancer on 6 Aug 2002. His obituary was published online at Legacy.com.
