Biography
Doede Joekes Dijkstra was born on 9 September 1835 in Hiaure, Westdongeradeel, Friesland, Nederland.[1]
Doede (22) and Nieske Wijbrens Posthumus (22) were married on 15 May 1858 in Westdongeradeel.[2] Nieske was born on 11 January 1836 in Westdongeradeel, Hantumhuizen, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Wiebren Klazes Posthumus and Antje Lubberts Braaksma. Their son was Wybren Dijkstra (29 June 1861 – 21 March 1939).
Doede died on 14 July 1904 in Engwierum, Oostdongeradeel, Friesland, aged 68.[3]
- Doede’s brother, Rienk Joekes Dijkstra, died in 1881, at an early age. His widow, Adriaantje van der Weit, went to USA, following her two sons, in 1892, and she settled down in the Friesland-area in Wisconsin. Probably she was sponsored by the local church, and I strongly suspect she went to the USA based on oral recommendation from her uncle. It's possible that Wijbren went to the USA because of contacts with her, but I don't have any evidence of that. You can imagine that her six sons, all bearing the name Dijkstra (Dykstra) got a lot of (grand)children. Many of them still live in the Madison/Friesland/Beaver City area in Wisconsin.
