Biography

DEATH OF MR JOHN DINES. A very old resident of Singleton, in the person of Mr. John Dines, passed away at his residence, John Street, on Thursday morning last, at the advanced age of 83 years. The deceased had lived there for a very long time, and for a number of years had carried on a butchering business. He was born in Hertfordshire, England, on June 22, 1829, and in the year 1858 he came out to Australia in the "Duncan Dunbar", being for a time in employment at Maitland. He afterwards came to Singleton, and entered the service of Mr. Richard Dines, of Hamilton Hill, and afterwards of Mr. G. Loder, of Abbey Green. After some years he went into business on his own account, in Singleton as a butcher. He subsequently removed to fresh premises where he remained for some 30 years, building the house in which he lived until the day of his death. In his younger days, the late Mr. Dines was a keen sportsman and a great lover of horses. He was the owner of a number of racers, one of which, Steward, won the Epsom Handicap. The remains were interred in the Church of England Cemetery. — 'Argus '

His wife is Frances; there is a marriage of John Dines and Frances Marshall in March 1850, at St. Martin's, London. Her father is William. Frances' death is on 11 Jun 1886, at Singleton. (NSW Death 13363/1886)

A daughter Harriet Jane is born Sep 1857 at St. Lukes, Middlesex; she dies as Harriet J. Empey (NSW Death 12301/1887) at Singleton aged 29.

The couple's children in Australia include: Ann C b.1857, Sarah A b.1860, Charles R b.1863, James A b.1865, George E b. 1867.

The Richard Dines in the obituography is also from Hertfordshire; we assume they are relations, and that John has followed his relation to this place. Richard is also a keen horse breeder.
