Biography

Birth - 1869

Eliza Amy Diplock was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in the second quarter of 1869 the daughter of Edwin Diplock and Eliza Longley ^[1]

She was baptised in St. John's church on May 30th 1869. Her father, Edwin, was a painter, and the family lived at Lew, an area in the centre of the town.^[2] Her mother’s maiden name was Longley.^[1]

Census - 1871

In the 1871 census, the two year old is recorded as Amy Diplock. The family is living at 22 Meadow Road, in the Southborough area of Tunbridge Wells. Along with her parents, Eliza Amy has an eight month sister, Helen.^[3]

Census - 1881

By the time of the 1881 census, the family has grown with five more children being born. Eliza is once again enumerated as Eliza A, and her younger sister is now Ellen A, not Helen as in 1871. There are two years between each of the children, Eliza is the oldest at 12 years, and Ernest is just 9 days old. The family of nine are now living at 36 Standen Street.^[4]

Census -1891

In 1891, Eliza is once again recorded as Amy. This time she is living with her Grandmother, Mariah Diplock, and her Great Uncle, Thomas Golding, at 31 William Street, Tunbridge Wells. Amy is employed as a Dressmaker.^[5]

Marriage - 1896

In 1896, Eliza married Alexander Popper, a 33 year old Carpenter from Middlesex, in Hendon, Middlesex.^[6][7][8]

Census - 1901

When the 1901 census was taken, Eliza and Alexander were living at 79 Bower Lane, Maidstone, Kent, with their three children; Dora aged 6, Amelia one year old, and Cecily 4 weeks old.^[7] Dora's age suggests that she was born before Eliza and Alexander married.

Census - 1911

The question of Dora's birth is partly resolved in the 1911 census return. Alexander and Eliza, her name is recorded as Amy Eliza, are now living in Portswood, a suburb of Southampton, Hampshire. There are seven children listed at 1 Brighton Villas, Manor Farm Road. The first is Dora May, a 16 year old servant who is described as a Stepdaughter. The census also confirms that only six children have been born alive in the present marriage.^[9] Various searches for a birth or baptism for Dora May have proved fruitless.

Voters' List - 1920

In 1920, Alexander and Amy Eliza(sic) Popper appear in the electoral roll, living at 1 Woodland Road, Walton, Liverpool.^[10]

Death of Husband - 1932

Alexander Popper died in Liverpool in the spring of 1932.^[11]

Census - 1939 Register

Eliza May is therefore a widow when the 1939 Register is compiled at the start of WW2. Eliza is living with two of her sons, Alec Charles Walter and David Clifford, on Berwick Road, in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Also listed is Lilian O Roberts, nee Popper, who was born in 1930, and presumably Eliza’s granddaughter. There is a discrepancy in Eliza’s date of birth on the 1939 Register. It shows she was born on March 19th 1871.^[12] Her birth registration, baptism and all but one of the census returns indicate that she was born in 1869.

Death - 1953

Eliza died in Cheshire in 1953 at the age of 84. ^[13]
