The Blanchard alias was adopted between 1910 and 1920.
Saved from 2014 correspondence with descendant of Harry George Blanchard Dowler and Paula Ochoa:
I hope you don't mind if I speculate a little.
His dad "Frank" had built up quite a reputation for himself as a lawman. (See the various attachments.)
By 1901 he had moved from the Palmadale area and was living in Los Angeles. 1901 was a sad year for the family. Maud, the sister a year younger than Harry George died in April of that year. On Christmas Day father Frank and his son Ralph when our fishing in a small boat, and never returned. The search party found their capsized boat, but the bodies were never recovered.
The newspaper articles indicate the family was on hard times. It seems with no recovery of the bodies, even payment on Frank's life insurance was delayed a few years. By 1906 Harry George's younger brothers had started committing petty crimes. The newspaper account stated George (not yet 25 years old) was supporting the family and he and his mother felt the disgrace involved with the crimes of the brothers Burl and Frank.
Harry George was still in L.A. for the 2010 census. I've lost track of him after that, and it's unclear if he was present for his mother's passing in 1923.
You indicate by 1928 he's a resident of Texas. "In his travels through Central America he met and married his only wife, Paula Ochoa."
That would fit with a man freed from the burden of supporting his widowed mother, escaping from the burdens of living in the shadows of a somewhat famous lawman father, and suffering the disgrace of wayward brothers.
