Biography

João was born on 14 Feb 1871 (bpt 23 Feb) on the island of Sao Nicolau to José João Duarte and Vicencia Rosa Da Encarnacao. ^[1]

In 1895 in New Bedford he married widow Anna Gonsalves Senna. He was said to be 22-24yrs old (bc1871-73) and a seaman. ^[2]

By 1900 they are living at 236 South Street, New Bedford. John was born March 1861, and 'Hannah' was born April 1862. They say they have been married 15 years (actually 5), and both arrived 1891 (Anna was 1893). Hannah has one child, still living (nothing for John). Clearly this is 14 year old son 'Andre' (says born May 1886). John is employed on coastal boats. ^[3] (See Research Note)

In 1913 he is found arriving at New Bedford from Brava on the bark Charles G. Rice. João José Duarte, 41yrs, married, laborer. Last permanent address - Praia. Relative & address in Brava - son Francisco José Duarte, Achada Lom. Sao Friago, Cape Verde Islands. Final destination - Boston. ^[4]

In 1920 he and his wife are mentioned in the New Bedford marriage of their widowed daughter Rosa (Duarte) Francis, born in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde Islands. ^[5]

In 1930 the couple are renting at 228 Acushnet Ave, New Bedford: John D. Duarte, 69 (bc1861), first married at 25 (c1886), & Annie Duarte 65yrs (bc1865), first married at 21 (c1886). Both born Cape Verde Islands and both arrived 1902. John works as a weaver in a cotton mill. ^[6]

Research Notes

1/ Date confusion - In the marriage data both Anna's and John's ages are crossed out and overwritten. John was first 22yrs (bc1873) then became 24yrs (bc1871). In the 1900 census he says he was born March 1861. In the 1930 census below again his birth is indicated around 1861. At their marriage John appears to be 3 years younger than Annie, yet afterwards he seems to have consistently become a number of years older!

In the 1930 census he says he was 25 years old at the time of marriage (Dec 1895) which corresponds with a birth in 1870. Annie's first marriage at 21 would indicate her birth around 1867.
