Biography

There are legal affairs documented in Louisa County that are associated with this Henry Duke:

On 19 Mar 1745, Henry Duke of Hanover County, negro man slave condemned for murder.[1]

In 1759 Henry Duke deeded property from Jno. Tisdale.[2]

Edward Walton, Henry Duke, John Moss wit. to deed Clevears Duke of St. Martins Parish, Hanover County, to William Snelson the younger of St. Martins Parish, Louisa 100 acres on branches of Locust Creek[3]

At the 12 May 1766 Louisa Co., VA court [4] Henry Duke was involved in the following lawsuits:

Henry Duke vs John Moss Petition continued.
Henry Duke vs David Thomson Pett Cont.
Henry Duke vs Robert Thomson Pett.
Henry Duke vs Zach Cosby Pett Cont.

On 13 Jul 1766 Henry Duke wrote to Mr. Patrick Henry, "Sir, Please stop the suit of Zache Cosby . . . Henry Duke."[5] This was Zacharaiah, Zaccheus or Zacheus Cosby, son of David Cosby and Mary Johnson Cosby of Hanover County, VA. It may have been with respect to this or a related matter that in Aug 1771 there is listed Patrick Henry vs Henry Duke.

Henry Duke and Ann his wife to Henry Duke, Jr., February 8, 1790, 30 acres adjoining lands of Clevears Duke, Indian Creek Road, Louisa County, VA. [6]

Henry Duke and Ann his wife to Clevears Duke, February 8, 1790, 70 acres, Indian Creek road, Louisa County, VA.

Cleavers Duke left a bequest to his brother Henry Duke in his 30 Dec 1784 Louisa Co., VA will, probated the 14 Feb 1785:

Item – I give unto my brother Henry Duke the sum of fifty pounds to be kept in the hands of my Executors and payed to him out at the rate of two pounds a year during his life and after his decease to be divided among my nineteen grand children or their representatives. Likewise my waring apparel, except as part which my wife may make use of. [7]

An account notes that this Henry Duke had at least two sons: Henry Duke, Jr. whose wife appears to have been Susannah and John Duke. [8] No source is given for that information, but it is consistent with the evidence that the Duke family of Goochland County was that of a John Duke, who was -- like Henry -- associated with the Cosby family, having named a son Cosby Duke.
