Biography

Joseph and his two brothers Nicodemus and Charles were transported to Australia in 1826, the same year their mother Esther died. Their father had died in 1819 so life would have been very difficult for their mother and other siblings.

Joseph had one child Esther born 15 Dec 1834 in Hobart, Tasmania with Elizabeth whom we don’t know her maiden name as no marriage record to be found. Joseph and Anne Groves had four children as follows; Rebecca, George, James & Nicodemus, all born in New South Wales, Australia.

Some trees on Ancestry somehow have extra children in their tree from the 1841 and 1851 Census in England for a different couple named Joseph Arundel (Arnold) DUNN and Ann Elizabeth DYTEMAN. This emphasises the importance of doing your own research and not copying over other people’s mistakes and giving more attention to detail when sourcing profiles.

There was another Joseph Dunn from Ireland whom was also a convict around the same age, not to be confused with this Joseph from Hackney, Middlesex, England.

Sydney Gazette & New South Wales Advertiser, Saturday 31 December 1836

Nicodemus Dunn, Charles Dunn, Eliza Dunn, Mary Brown, Mary Ann Cummings, William Adams, and George Bryan were charged by Mary Collins with assaulting her under the following circumstances. Yesterday week, on passing the house of the Dunns, whom she considered had a spite against, her because she had them fined for selling spirits, they abused her in a violent manner, saying they would serve her out; they would have it out of her; a stone was thrown at her by Bryan, he having been instigated by the Dunns. They were also in the habit of calling he "squinty eye", most opprobrious of epithets, because forsooth one of her sparklers had a fond affinity to the other. The Bench ordered four of the parties to keep the peace towards Mary Ann, who left the office rejoicing.
