James Dunne was an American soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. For his gallant actions at the Siege of Vicksburg, McGuire was awarded the Medal of Honor.

James Dunne, age 21, was 5 foot 4 inches tall with light hair, light eyes and a light complexion. Dunne, a resident of Chicago, was a brakeman. He was born in Michigan. On August 7, 1862, Dunne enlisted in the Chicago Mercantile Battery, Illinois Light Artillery. He mustered in as a Private on August 29, 1862. [2] During the May 22 assault on Vicksburg, White's battery carried a six-pounder cannon up and down steep terrain. White moved the gun into an embrasure of the Confederates and began firing. [3]

On July 10, 1865, Corporal James Dunne mustered out of service. [2]

For his gallant action at the Siege of Vicksburg, James Dunne was awarded the Medal of Honor. [4][5]

Postbellum

James Dunne married Eva Fitch about 1870. In 1870 James and his wife Eva, were living in Chicago, Illinois. Also in their household was Lizzie Dunne, age 18, (presumably his sister). He was a news agent by trade. [6] In 1880, James Dunne and his wife, Eva, were living in Chicago, Illinois. They had 2 daughters living with them: Agnes, age 6, and Celia, age 1. He worked for a news agency. [7]

James Dunne passed away in 1915. He was buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois. [1]
