William Edes of England landed in Naumkeag (Salem) in a ship called "the Lion's Whelp" in 1629. Worked as a ship's carpenter and servant to Richard Saltonstall building a saw mill for him.
Research Notes
There is a William Eade who was christened in Essex, 07 Apr 1607, father James[1]
Great Migration Directory entry: Eedes, William: Dorset or Somerset; 1629 on Lyon’s Whelp; unknown [GMB 618; WF 295]. According to RC Anderson's research, the only mention of William Eeds is a letter of instructions from the Massachusetts Bay Company records regarding the request of Rev. John White regarding passengers from Dorset and Somerset on the Lyon's Whelp: "to appoint Hugh Tillie and William Eedes for sevants to Richard Saltonstall". RC Anderson comments: "If William Eedes did come in 1629, he must have returned soon, as there is no record of him in New England." His conclusions imply there is no evidence connecting this William Eedes to the later William Eeds of Charlestown.
