Frieda was born in Germany in 1866, the daughter of John Fairburn, who at that time was studying languages there, and Philippa Stephens. Her mother died when she was only two and she was brought up in New Zealand by her father and stepmother. She married Gordon Wimberley in Australia in 1887 and bore him four children, two of whom died in infancy. After her husband's untimely death (1894) she took her two surviving sons, aged 5 and 2, to Lübeck, Germany, where they stayed with her elder married sister, Grace, and then to England. She earned some money through her proficiency in ballet dancing, while her friends Mr & Mrs Cutter in Wales gave a home and education to her sons. By Sep 1918 she was living at "Pelham", Lingfield, Surrey. Later an old friend, Harry Tollemache, had a cottage built for her at Lancing, Sussex. She died there in 1944, aged 78.
