Residence

Elizabeth appears in the Census of 1841 living with Farmer, Thomas (Duncan) and her sister, Margaret (Fairlie). According to Elizabeth (Fairlie), Thomas was reputed to be her daughter's father but there is no record of Margaret's birth, as was the case with natural children. They live in the Village of Troustie, in the Parish of Crail, Fife, Scotland. Her surname is spelt as "Fairley" in the Census Record[4]. By 1851, Eliza is living with her parents Alexander (Fairlie) and Margaret (Harvey); her daughter Margaret "Maggie" Ann (Duncan); siblings George and Betty "Betsy" (Fairlie) and her niece, Eliza (Grieve). Their address is the Hamlet of Beley Bridge, near the Village of Dunino, Dunino Parish, Fife, Scotland[5].

She disappears from the Census Records for 1861 only to turn up in 1871 living with her daughter Margaret "Maggie" Ann (Duncan) in the Hamlet of Beley Bridge, near the Village of Dunino, Dunino Parish, Fife, Scotland[6]. With the arrival of the Census of 1881, she is now become the widow of Robert (Lumsden) and is living with her daughter, Margaret "Maggie" Ann (Duncan). They are still living in the Hamlet of Beley Bridge, in Dunino Parish, Fife, Scotland[7]. By 1891, she is living with her widowed stepdaughter, Helen (Lumsden/Williamson); Helen's sons Thrift and Robert (Williamson) and Domestic Servants, Helen S. (Brown) and Jane B. (Duff). Their address is Newton of Nydie Village, St Andrews, St Andrews and St Leonards District, Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom. Her surname is spelt as "Ferlie or Lumsden"[8].

Occupation

With the Census of 1841, Elizabeth's occupation is listed as being a Female Servant. However, by the Census of 1881, she records her employment as being a Former Outdoor Worker

Elizabeth "Eliza" (Fairlie) passes away on the 2 March 1899 at 11.00 am in the Village of Thanecroft, south west of the Town of Newburgh, at the south shore of the Firth of Tay, Parish of Newburgh, Fife, Scotland.
