Elizabeth "Eliza" was born on the 22 June 1812 in the Hamlet of Falside, north west of the Village of Kingsbarns, in the Parish of Kingsbarns, Fife, Scotland. She was the daughter of Alexander Fairlie (an Agricultural Labourer) and Margaret Harvey.

They live in the Village of Troustie, in the Parish of Crail, Fife, Scotland. Her surname is spelt as "Fairley" in the Census Record^[4]. By 1851, Eliza is living with her parents Alexander (Fairlie) and Margaret (Harvey); her daughter Margaret "Maggie" Ann (Duncan); siblings George and Betty "Betsy" (Fairlie) and her niece, Eliza (Grieve). Their address is the Hamlet of Beley Bridge, near the Village of Dunino, Dunino Parish, Fife, Scotland^[5].
