Biography

Jefferson was born in 1843. He was the son of Thomas Falkner. He passed away in 1907.

Born in Randolph County, Alabama to Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Breed Falkner, his father having removed from Cobb County, Georgia before his birth. Capt. Falkner was first interred at Marbury Cemetery but circa 1921 his mortal remains were moved to Cemetery #2.

He entered Mercer University at Pennfield, Georgia, at the age of sixteen, but left there two years later to enlist in his father's cavalry company. After his discharge from service, he was for two years engaged in farming and then taking up the study of law, was admitted to the bar in Montgomery, Ala, in 1868. He immediately formed a partnership with his father and they practiced law together until the latter retired.

Married in 1887 to Lizzie Cameron. She was the daughter of Andrew Cameron who was a well known merchant of Montgomery. Appointed in 1890 as district attorney for Alabama of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company. Prominent in politics, he never sought to hold an office and had, at all times, diligently worked for principles rather than parties.

Served four years as the alderman of the City of Montgomery and two terms as city attorney for the City of Montgomery. He was National Committeeman and member of the National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Party during the campaign of 1896. He was also the Alabama member of the Executive Committee of the "Indianapolis Monetary Conference." Inscription.

Officer in the Confederate Army and founder of the Confederate Soldier's Home of Alabama. According to the Alabama Historical Commission's website, "Falkner organized public fund drives for a proposed United Confederate Veteran's camp. He organized statewide efforts to sell tickets to hear former Tennessee governor Bob Taylor speak at the Montgomery auditorium on behalf of the Soldiers' Home in May 1902; the effort raised nearly $4,000. Notable individuals also contributed, including Booker T. Washington and Eli Torrance, commander of the Union Army veterans organization. The Alabama Confederate Soldiers’ Home consisted of 22 buildings, including 10 cottages, an administrative building, a hospital, a mess hall, and barns. Staff size at the home varied; in 1927 the staff consisted of the Commandant, a doctor and nurse, a dairyman, two laborers, three dishwashers, two cooks, and two washerwomen. The facility was intended to house a maximum of 100 residents. However, during its peak years (1914-1918), as many as 104 residents lived there."

1st Lieut Co B 8 Confederate Cavalry CSA.

The obituary for Francis Brantley Breed was printed in The Christian Index dated November 9, 1854. It indicated that she died in the home of her son-in-law J. Faulkner in LaFayette, Alabama "30th day of September last".
