Biography

Notables Project
Randle Feilden CMG is Notable.

Randle was born in 1824. He was the son of Joseph Feilden and Frances Master. He was christened in Blackburn, Lancashire in 1826.

He joined the army in 1843, accepting a commission with the 60th Rifles, and subsequently served with his regiment in the Cape of Good Hope, India, Burma and British North America. It was for commanding a battalion of the 60th during the Red River Expedition under General Wolsey that he was awarded “Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George” (C.M.G.).[1]

Randle Joseph Feilden married Jean Campbell Hozier on 21 Mar 1861 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[2]

His brother Henry Master Feilden died childless in 1875 and Randle inherited the family estate at Witton in Lancashire. [3] Henry had been M.P. from 1863 to 1875[4] [5] On the sudden death of the incumbent MP for North Lancashire in 1880, Randle announced his own candidature for the Conservative party in a letter to the electors printed in the local paper. He declared himself against Home Rule for Ireland, in praise of the government’s foreign policy, in favour of adhering to the principles of the Church of England and in particular in favour of including religious instruction in elementary schools, in favour if the repeal of the Indian cotton duties to benefit local industry, welfare of agricultural interest, and to cut expenditure and taxation[6] After his election to Parliament in 1880, the local newspaper printed a large feature including information about General Feilden’s career and family history and gave away a portrait of him with the paper [7] The following general election in 1885 saw the constituency boundaries altered, and General Feilden was once again returned to Parliament, this time as MP for Chorley, Lancashire.[8], a seat which he continued to hold until his death [9]

He donated land and contributed towards the building costs for the St. Francis’ Church, Feniscliffe, consecrated in 1893.[10]

He died in 1895 (likely as a result of his suffering with influenza) and was buried on 27 May 1895 in Witton, Lancashire, England.[11]

Obituary

“DEATH OF GENERAL FEILDEN M. P. The death is announced of Lieutenant-General Randle Joseph Feilden C.M.G., M.P. for the Chorley Division of Lancashire, which took place on Sunday, at his residence in Grosvenor Gardens, London. The gallant officer was born in 1824, and entered the army in March, 1843. He commanded the 1st Battalion of the 60th Rifles on the Red River expedition of 1870, being nominated a C.M.G. for his services in that campaign. He was returned to Parliament for the North Division of Lancashire in 1880, and for the Chorley Division in 1885, a seat which he has since occupied. He was a Conservative in politics and was in favour of all practicable reduction of public expenditure consistent with the complete efficiency of the army and navy. He greatly interested himself in questions affecting the industries of his county, and was in favour of the repeal of the Indian cotton duties. General Feilden married in 1861. Jean Campbell, daughter of Mr. James Hozier, of Maddislie Castle, Lanarkshire. By General Feilden’s death a bye-election is necessitated in the Chorley Division. General Feilden had been in ill-health since Christmas, but (says the Press Association) at no time was his indisposition looked upon as serious. On Saturday evening he appeared to be not so well, but his family had no idea that death was so near at hand, and it was not until Sunday morning that he grew rapidly worse and expired almost suddenly. The immediate cause of the honourable member’s death is understood to be heart disease.” “The Herald” 25 May 1895 Page 6 Column 5
