Biography

Revolutionary War Patriot

Robert was born in 1755. He passed away in 1840.

His grave marker spells his last name as Fitz.

He was a Revolutionary War veteran, served as a Private and was at the surrender of the British Commander Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA.

He enlisted in March 1776 in Mecklenburg County, VA and served under Captain James Anderson. After a nine month tour of duty in the tidewater Virginia area, he was discharged and returned home.

He re-entered the Continental Army in the Spring of 1779 as a substitute for William Baker of Mecklenburg County, VA. He served under Captain Reuben Vaughan and was in the Battle of Stono Ferry near Charleston, SC in July 1779. He was discharged after a six month tour of duty and returned home.

He re-entered the Army in early 1781 as a substitute for Stephen Jones of Halifax County, VA and served under Captain Marmaduke Standfield. After a four month tour of duty in the tidewater and Dismal Swamp areas of Virginia, he was discharged.

He re-entered the Army in May 1781 as a substitute for Nicholas Vaughan of Halifax County. He served under Captain Edward King and was in the battle of the Siege of Ninety-Six, a British Fort in northwestern South Carolina, during May and June 1781. After a three month tour of duty he was discharged.

He re-entered the Army after a few days as a substitute for William Watkins of Halifax County. He served under Captain Fleming Bates in the battle of the Seige of Yorktown and was at the surrender of British Commander Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.

Married Susannah Pass on May 16, 1780 in Halifax County, VA. She died in Tennessee in 1849.
