Biography

Jacob was born about 1774 to Christian Flaugher and Margaret Unknown on their farm in Antrim Township, Cumberland, Pennsylvania which later became part of Franklin County.

Jacob was a Blacksmith, a trade which he learned from his father, Christian, and passed down through many generations of his descendants.[1]

On Jan. 20, 1797, Jacob married Margaret Fultz at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland.[2] He was later confirmed as a member at St. John's in 1804.[3]

Jacob and Margaret owned farms in both Franklin County, Pennsylvania and Washington County, Maryland, which meant his children were raised in both locations. By the 1830 Census, his eldest son, Jacob B. Flaugher, who had married Sarah Cole and was raising a family of his own, had taken over operations of the farm in Pennsylvania whereas the rest of the family were living near Hagerstown, Maryland where they all married their future spouses.

The 1830 Census is the last known record of Jacob and Margaret. It is presumed that they died sometime before the next census. Their son, Jacob, left the farm in Pennsylvania and took his family to Seneca County, Ohio in 1837 where he became the first mayor of Fort Ball (later Tiffin). Son, Samuel, left Maryland for Iowa in 1844 and son John, moved to Iowa in 1870. All that was left to continue the family name in the Hagerstown area was John's eldest son, William, who is the ancestor of all the Flaugher descendants still living in that area today.
