Biography

Ellen Fortune was born on 22nd April 1871 at Brisbane, Queensland (Australia). She was the third daughter of Scottish emigrants, Alexander Fortune and Agnes Turnbull. ^[1]

Ellen married Irish emigrant, Samuel Hawthorne on 1st August 1894 at Queensland. ^[2] At the time, Ellen was four months pregnant with their first child. They had nine children, one of whom died in early childhood. Ellen lost her eldest son, Walter during the First World War.

Having been widowed for fifteen years and aged 73 years, Ellen passed away on 9th February 1945 at Queensland. ^[3] She was survived by four sons and two daughters.
