Biography

For the following biography, I have taken liberally from the writings of Louise (Creamer) Moulton, a very literate and great family historian. -- Kent Creamer

Vera Louise Frankenbery was born on April 11, 1903, near Altoona , Kansas to William Walter Frankenbery (1874-1962) and Minnie Belle Elliott) (1878-1949). She was a happy child, but cheerfully accepted the responsibilities of helping with the gardening, cooking, canning and other chores around a farm home, including helping care for her younger brothers and sisters. She attended Hatler District #16, a small building, which was also attended by her brothers and sisters. She took the graduation exam in order to enter High School (few students went on to High School in such rural areas). She received her diploma at Fredonial High school. She attended Baker University and went on to teach at country schools for 2 to 4 years.

"Vera was a kind, loving person, tough and resourceful at making a good life from whatever she had to work with. By her fifth wedding anniversary, she had a terribly sick husband, children 4, 2 and 1 years old, and no money. But she made clothes for us from flour sacks or clothes discarded by others. She gardened, canned and dried food, and made tasty meals out of such cheap food as corn meal mush. Her parents contributed meat, eggs and milk frequently, but there was always a problem accepting these things without Lyle's overdone pride causing a family squabble."[1]

She married Lyle Martin Creamer and they had three children together. Their marriage slowly deteriorated and she was left raising her 3 children mostly on her own. However, Lyle did not actually divorce her until the youngest was out of high school.

She began a new career as a school librarian in Wichita. Driven by her faith and a desire to do good to others, she took a librarian position on the Navajo Reservation at Sanostee, New Mexico (a tiny school town near Shiprock in the Four Corners area). She stayed there until being afflicted with a deadly stroke. The doctors at the time gave her a 50% chance at surviving and said that if she survived, she would most likely be half-paralyzed.

She recovered, however, and returned to Kansas in 1972. She married her friend and neighbor, Virgil A. Hanson, on August 18, 1973, in Chanute, Kansas. She died on April 25, 1983, in Chanute, , Kansas, at the age of 80, and was buried in Fredonia, Kansas.

I spent a summer with her on the Navajo Reservation, and developed an even deeper love respect and admiration for her since. To me she represented the best of Christianity, with her quiet, kind-hearted, determined devotion. She will always have a special place in my heart. -- Kent Creamer
