Biography

Charlotte had one sister, June, who was five years older. The two girls lived with their mother, H. Maude Logan Galloway, in Philadelphia, PA. She attended Hunter College for three years, studying administrative and secretarial skills.

Charlotte Galloway married Uriah T. Cartwright on 14 Jul 1944 in Tucson, Pima, Arizona. Both of them were enlisted in the Army. Upon deployment, Charlotte went to Belgium, while Uriah went to Italy.

Upon discharge from the Army in Philadelphia, Charlotte and Uriah moved to the Bronx, NY, where they lived for three years, until purchasing their home through the G.I. Bill at 119-04 Inwood Street, South Ozone Park, Queens, New York.

Their daughter, Joan Renee, born 12/7/1947, was 3 years old, when they moved to Queens from the Bronx. Their son, Carlton, was born on March 5, 1953.

While Uriah worked as a U.S. Railway Postal Clerk, Charlotte served as the secretary to the Assistant Director of the Veteran’s Administration in Manhattan. Later, she worked with disabled veterans at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, Queens, New York.

Charlotte was extremely entrepreneurial, She sold Avon Cosmetics, Easterling Silverware and China, Tupperware, AYDS Diet Candy, and Charis Girdles. She loved to cook and sold dinners from her basement, finished kitchen to neighbors. Upon her death she had two children, two grands, and two great grands, Robert and Anthony, sons of Mimi Johnson.
