Sarah was the eighth of twelve children born to Peter Gibbons Jr and Sarah Greene. Church records show she was baptized by Rev. Jedediah Smith in 1764. Her siblings were: Elizabeth; Peter III; Lemuel; Bildad; twins Mary and Sarah [both died young]; Timothy; Eli; Jedediah Howe; Mary; Hannah [died young].

On October 12, 1780, Sarah married Joseph DeWolf, son of Peter DeWolf and Sarah Couch, at Granby, Connecticut. They had 13 children; the first ten were born in Granby; the last three in Vernon, Ohio:

Children born at Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut: Henry Champion b 3 Aug 1781; Ruhamah b 8 Jun 1783; Tensard Robinson b 5 Jun 1785; Joseph Jr b 6 Apr 1787; Sarah b 10 Mar 1789; Catherine b 6 Nov 1790; Horatio b 31 May 1793; Elizabeth b 24 Feb 1795; Louisa b 28 Mar 1797; Eli Gibbons b 19 Mar 1799

Children born at Vernon, Trumbull Co., Ohio: Adeline b 18 Mar 1802, Lemuel/Samuel b 22 Jan 1804 and Amanda b 22 Apr 1806

They were pioneer settlers in Trumbull Co., Ohio where, according to "History of Trumbull & Mahoning Counties," Vol. 2, pg 383, they moved in the spring of 1800, settling one mile south of the town.
